I paint mainly representational landscape and figure work. I strive to make reality more than real, telling a story in compositions whilst emphasising light and colour in my own 'handwriting' style.
I am influenced by Monet, Van Gogh, Eric Gill, Matisse and Picasso. I strive towards a graphic rendering, though return to 'academic' drawing often.
I abhore the lack of drawing and observational skills to be seen in so much contemporary 'conceptual' art which I see as less art, more craft. Artists such as Hockney and Hopper in the USA are examples of good modern representationalism with drafting and painting skills. I expect a return to these skills in the next decade or so.
I believe that photography can also now be seen as a true art form, since one can manipulate, mix and change photographs to become works of art in their own right. I hope to experiment more with images as art form though these will always lack the handwriting of a painter.
