I stood for a solid 6 hours in the hot sun at Arles in February 2015, trying to emulate the great Van Gogh (Vincent as he liked to be known). When I got this and other works home, they appeared to be dull in colour, so I overworked the painting to this result. It is of course, not the bridge that helped Van Gogh to fame, (that one being outside the town), but a more modern road bridge. Arles was a special treat for me as I worked alongside Peter Brown and Norman Teeling and learned a great deal about en plein air speed painting.
